We ask our artists to answer these questions. We do not edit/alter/influence/change any answer they give in these questions.
What subjects do you focus on most in your work?
I focus mostly on humans/humanoid characters! I occasionally draw furries, animals and object heads characters too, though. (such as Tenna from deltarune)
What themes show up again and again?
I mostly draw OC art and their themes are heavily focused on mental health stuff (for example burn out, the need to please EVERYONE, and religious trauma)
What emotions do you want your work to trigger?
I honestly want it to show comfort - like a safe space type of thing
What inspired you to start making art?
I started it out as a way to bond with my childhood friend since she’s an artist and since then it just felt natural to make art
What influences shaped your style?
My art style changed drastically after watching The Owl House and seeing Dana Terrace’s art, I just loved it so much it felt like goals.
What artists or media influence you today?
At the moment I’m trying to study Yuto Sano’s art style as well as the Persona 5 one.
How did your style change over time?
It went from really cartoony to kinda semi-realistic now! I felt like I couldn’t include enough body types in my cartoony art style so now it’s more like my chibi one. (pretty similar to persona 5 tactica)
What tools do you work in most often?
Either my sketchbook (mostly to design characters) or Ibis Paint on my phone
Why do you prefer those tools or formats?
I feel like I stare at the screen for too long if I design characters on my phone and Ibis Paint is just neat to be honest. Also makes it easier for me to draw regardless of where I am.
What does your creative process look like from start to finish.?
Rough sketch - Cleaner sketch - flat colors - line art - rendering
How long does a typical piece take you?
I mostly enjoy drawing half bodies and it takes me 2 to 4 hours on average.
What part of the process do you enjoy most?
Rendering!! It feels like I’m giving life to my art.
What part of the process feels hardest?
Line art since I focus a lot on getting the line weight right.
How do you handle creative blocks?
I try to distract myself from art and focus on something else for a while before trying again (preferably trying with one of my favorite characters for motivation), and if that doesn’t work I just practice drawing smooth lines or hatching on paper for a bit while watching something cozy.
What skills did you focus on improving first?
Anatomy since it really is crucial to know how the human body works to draw characters.
What skills are you working on now?
Line confidence, inking and angles I’m not used to.
How do you decide a piece is finished?
It heavily depends on my intention; for example, if I want to sketch out character ideas, then I just stop at the sketch once I’m satisfied with it. If it’s a gift art or something I want to post on social media, then I fully render it so yeah.
What feedback helps you improve?
Tips on anatomy or shading help me a LOT honestly.
What feedback do you ignore?
If a feature is obviously exaggerated on purpose and someone says “why does it look like that” or if the feedback is negative without being constructive.
What project are you most proud of and why?
I haven’t finished it yet but I’m nonetheless really proud of how I designed some ghost OCs of mine; basically thought “What if there was a cult that consisted of ghosts, and said ghosts had hierarchies similar to biblical angels, but said ‘angels’ lived under water.” I haven’t drawn them digitally yet though.
What project challenged you the most?
Getting used to drawing on my phone but it’s alright now!
What goals guide your work right now?
I’m hoping I can get good enough to start doing it for a living and become fully independent.
What type of work do you want to do more of?
I hope I can make more flashy/colorful art since it’s my personal favorite type of art.
What boundaries do you set with commissions or requests?
I don’t do NSFW, mecha, anything involving problematic stuff/hate speech or NFT/AI training.
What do you want people to understand after seeing your work?
I’d like for people to see how soulful human art is and potentially inspire young artists to keep doing what they like.
